The Peak District
“…they were obliged to give up the Lakes, and substitute a more contracted tour, and, according to the present plan, were to go no farther northwards than Derbyshire.”
The Peak District of England consists of rolling hills and rocky crags, popular with both walkers and climbers. Views of the valleys in between the peaks are magnificent, and it is here Elizabeth Bennet and her Uncle and Aunt Gardiner travel in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice*. You can watch Elizabeth traverse the rocks and hills in both popular versions of the film. The shot of Keira Knightley in the 2005 film standing on Stanage Edge has made it an even more popular walk than it was previously, and it’s only about a half hour’s drive from there to Chatsworth House, used as the location of Pemberley in the film and believed to be Austen’s inspiration for Mr. Darcy’s country seat.
Walking feels like the national past-time of the English, and this feels like an ideal place to walk, forget about your family troubles, and reconsider the character of the man whose proposal you refused.
