Chatsworth House
Chatsworth House in Derbyshire is the ultimate storied destination for a Pride and Prejudice* fan. Not only is it believed to be Jane Austen’s real-life inspiration for Mr. Darcy’s home, but the shots within and without in the 2005 film cement it in the hearts of fans as Pemberley. It certainly fits the description Austen gives when Elizabeth and the Gardiner’s arrive for their visit of the great estate.
“It was a large, handsome stone building, standing well on rising ground, and backed by a ridge of high woody hills; and in front, a stream of some natural importance was swelled into greater, but without any artificial appearance.”
You can spend a full day discovering the delights of Pemberley, just as Elizabeth and her Uncle and Aunt Gardiner did. Indoors, walk through the gallery of sculptures, and guess which piano room might belong to Miss Darcy. Explore the many pathways throughout the grounds and gardens and enjoy the views from the high ground. Walk until you can walk no more, then make your way indoors for a restorative cup of tea and some cakes.
“They entered the woods, and bidding adieu to the river for a while, ascended some of the higher grounds; when, in spots where the opening of the trees gave the eye power to wander, where many charming views of the valley, the opposite hills, with the long range of woods overspreading many, and occasionally part of the stream. Mr. Gardiner expressed a wish of going round the whole park, but feared it might be beyond a walk.”
