Surprise View in Keswick

If you drive about three miles outside of Keswick up the Borrowdale Road, you’ll cross the famous Ashness Bridge and arrive at Surprise View. From the top of this cliff you can look over almost all the Derwentwater and beyond to Bassenthwaite Lake. St. Herbert’s Island is clearly visible as a focal point, and if you zoom in closely below Bassentwaite Lake, to the right you can catch a glimpse of Lingholm, the house rented by Beatrix Potter’s family and whence came some of our favorite characters.

Besides the sweeping views over Keswick, the clifftop is vivid green in the summertime with heather growing on the hillside. It’s a gorgeous place for a little walk amidst the scenery that inspired so many writers and poets.
