Burnsall, North Yorkshire

Season 3 of All Creatures Great and Small is airing in the United States now, and when I saw that the wedding was filmed at the church in Burnsall, it took me back to January 2016 and the rainiest two weeks of our sojourn in North Yorkshire. Gone was the drizzle and mizzle. Here to stay was a settled downpour that just wouldn’t end. This unprecedented (to us) rainfall happened to coincide with my parents’ first trip to England. My husband resorted to looking at the radar for any portion of North Yorkshire without rain that we could drive to, and on the last day of my parents’ trip, that clear spot included one of the prettiest villages in the Yorkshire Dales.

It was cold when we stopped on the hillside overlooking the village. Heavy clouds lingered, creating a cover of silence save for the sounds of schoolchildren playing outside a primary school built in 1602. It was the perfect place to eat our sandwiches, meat pies, and cookies purchased at our local bakery before setting off that morning.

The views were stunning. Each time we drove into the Yorkshire Dales I asked myself and my husband why we didn’t do it more often. It wasn’t that far from our home! But the answer usually came quickly for both of us; someone usually got a little carsick on the narrow, winding roads, and those winding roads also made it take quite a long time to travel a short distance. But it was always worth the time and the carsickness.

St. Wilfrid’s served as the location for Darrowby Church in the past two series of All Creatures Great and Small, and there couldn’t be a more beautiful filming location. It’s the perfect spot to set off for a walk in the Dales. For more pictures around North Yorkshire and Burnsall, check out the Picture Gallery.
