Northanger Abbey

Jane Austen

Author:

A village in Wiltshire, the city of Bath, and Northanger Abbey in Gloucestershire

Setting:

Published in 1817 after the author’s death, Set around 1798

Year:

Northanger Abbey is the lightest and frothiest of Jane Austen’s six full-length novels. It’s also the shortest, and these two things combined make it great fun to read. Austen makes an eloquent defense of the value of novels in an age when novels were looked down upon. Even Gothic horror has entertainment value in Jane’s opinion, though she also makes fun of their excesses through her gentle satire. Besides the charming Henry Tilney, Northanger Abbey offers a window into the hustle and bustle of 18th century Bath that will have you longing to walk through the Pump Room arm-in-arm with a friend.
