Sherlock’s Coffee Shop

Today’s storied traveling post brings us back to North Yorkshire and to a second Sherlockian eatery: Sherlock’s Coffee Shop in Whitby. I came across this coffee shop quite by accident while walking around Whitby one afternoon, and I was so charmed by it I brought my family there for brunch on the last day of our stay in this beautiful North Yorkshire coastal town. Whitby’s most notable literary association is with Bram Stoker’s Dracula*, but I’ll never quibble with a good themed restaurant anywhere.

Inside, the restaurant is warm and inviting, decorated in an appropriate late 19th-century style. We drank coffee, hot chocolate, and ate some of the best pancakes we ever found in the UK. Since the time of my family’s visit, the coffee shop has expanded with two rooms to let that include breakfast downstairs at the coffee shop. There is also now an escape room that allows you to test your own deductive powers and solve a mystery alongside Sherlock Holmes. It sounds like a truly great literary escape.
