Grosmont Station

If you are visiting Whitby on the North Yorkshire coast, the nearby village of Grosmont is also worth a visit. You can easily drive or take the North Yorkshire Moors Railway steam train April through October. All of the old-fashioned signs for waiting rooms and refreshments made me feel like I was stepping into the world of The Railway Children* by E. Nesbit. Whether you’re taking the train or not, it’s thrilling to watch it puff into the station blowing black smoke and to catch a glimpse of diners on Pullman cars.

My original intent in visiting Grosmont was to go to Grosmont Bookshop, which is a wonderful mix of new and second-hand books. I was also delighted to find a few treasures in the Station Shop—three books in a Yorkshire mystery series I definitely began collecting for the cover-art. The train on the cover of Murder on a Summer’s Day* looks just like the one at Grosmont Station! It felt very apropos.

So many bookshops in the UK have incredible sets of Dickens like the one above in the Grosmont Bookshop. At the time it always seems reasonable not to buy several old heavy books, but I always regret leaving Dickens behind. If you’re exploring the North Yorkshire coast, I highly recommend a visit to Grosmont. Treat yourself to a book or five.

As always, you can find more pictures in the Photo Gallery.
